Children of the World
by Tessa Strickland, Kate DePalma & David Dean

We have so much love for this gorgeous book which takes you on a visual journey around the world.

Every child is unique but sometimes it can be difficult for kids to grasp just how different their own experience of growing up can be  compared to others. These beautifully illustrated pages feature children from all walks of life and offer a fascinating insight in to childhood experiences around the world.

It looks at different homes, families, bodies, clothes, skin colours, hats, leisure activities, working lives (including working children), food, methods of bathing, languages, names, religions and more. I can genuinely see the wonder on Ivy’s face as she picks through the information and asks questions about all the little details in the pictures.

The message throughout is that diversity is what makes the world a special place, but mixed in with this are little reminders that deep down we are all the same. We all have people who we love. We all experience a wide range of emotions. We all have a place in the universe. We all write our own stories.

The book also encourages children to think of people in terms of their individual story. Who are they? What experiences have they had? What has shaped them in to the person they are today? How does this make them feel?

The amount of thought which has gone in to the wonderful illustrations is breathtaking – from the beautiful patchwork cover right through to the tiny details on plates of food and inside different types of home.

At the back of the book there are 15 whole pages of additional notes to help guide discussion. This includes breakdowns of the pictures which show which countries are being depicted, translations of the language elements, details on how to play the games which are shown and ingredients for the tasty and unusual dishes.

This is truly a treasure trove of information which should have a place in every school library, and it would also make a fantastic gift. HIghly recommended!
