Isadora Moon Goes To School
by Harriet Muncaster

Hopefully by now you will have read my announcement from earlier this week – I am going to start reviewing Early Chapter Books alongside Board Books and Picture Books as we have recently started reading them at bedtime!

I am starting with Isadora Moon as this was the first chapter book we tried and Ivy is OBSESSED. We read the first book – Isadora Moon Goes To School – over 3 days and she loved it so much that I ordered the rest of the series.

Isadora Moon is a very special little girl. Her mum is a fairy and her dad is a vampire, which makes her a vampire fairy! She lives with her family and her very special friend Pink Rabbit.

In this first story, Isadora is ready to start school but she doesn’t know which one she should attend. There are schools for vampires and schools for fairies, but there aren’t any for vampire fairies!

First she tries fairy school but she’s a little too vampire to fit in. Then she tries vampire school but her fairyness makes her stand out. What on earth is poor Isadora going to do? But then she realises there’s a third option – human school! Her parents are sceptical but soon discover it might just be perfect. Humans are all so wonderfully unique that perhaps Isadora will fit right in…

We love everything about Isadora’s world. The stories are fantastic fun and promote individuality and acceptance. Book one is all about Isadora discovering (and becoming comfortable with) who she is and in the other books in the series we see her flourish. Isadora’s world is one that is instantly recognisable to children – she goes to school, attends birthday parties, has sleepovers, goes camping and gets in to quite a bit of trouble along the way – but all her adventures are magical.

Each book is around 120 pages and is divided in to chapters with lots of beautiful illustrations. It’s perfect to read aloud to the 4+ age group and for children aged 6 and over to read by themselves.

Ivy loved the books so much that we asked our very talented friend Shannon of Mockingbird Makes if she thought she might be able to crochet us some cuddly toys – and wow did she deliver! Ivy was so excited and now she gets to recreate Isadora’s adventures at home.
