The Tale of Starting School
by Natalie Talisman & Kirsten Taylor

Ivy is starting Reception in September and, I’m not going to lie, I’m a little bit emotional about it. So much so, that when this book arrived in the post I had a little cry!

So far she is unfazed by the whole thing, possibly because she has been attending pre-school on the same premises, but I am still planning to dedicate some time over the summer to talking about what she can expect when she makes the switch to ‘big school’. This beautiful book  from Tales of Me is going to form the centrepiece of that learning.

Part primer and part scrapbook, ‘The Tale of Starting School’ takes you and your child on a journey through a big moment in both of your lives.

The first half of the book is designed to be filled out in advance of the big day to help children become familiar with their new environment and the school day itself. There are spaces to stick in photographs of your teacher and classroom, pictures of uniform for you to paint in school colours and pages to fill in about the things you are looking forward to. There’s even a spot for that all-important first day of school photo on the doorstep!

The latter half is filled with useful information which will help your child prepare. This includes a list of things they should try and master, like doing up their coat, putting on their shoes and wiping their own bottom. There are also some lovely tips on how to relax and unwind after a busy day at school. Mixed in with these pages you will find more interactive sections about things like morning routine and future aspirations. There’s also a page to glue in good luck messages from family and friends.

The fun doesn’t end on the first day of school though. At the very back you’ll find pages to store early pieces of school work , first attempts at writing, details from parents evening, the first official school photo and their very first school report.

I love everything about this book. It’s undoubtedly extremely valuable for preparing a child for school and the interactive element provides lots of opportunity for asking questions and sharing fears – but what I like most is that, when complete, you have a wonderful record of this important milestone which you can treasure forever.
