The Highway Rat By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

The Highway RatThe Highway Rat is a baddie – he roams the highway stealing food from his fellow animals. Chocolates, biscuits, clover and even leaves – they all end up in his tummy. He shows no remorse and is extremely ungrateful. Meanwhile, his fellow animals are growing increasingly hungry and sad.

Then one day he tries to steal from a quick-thinking duck and everything starts to unravel. Has the Highway Rat finally found his match?

This is Julia Donaldson at her best (and we love the cheeky inclusion of a Gruffalo cookie in the illustrations!)

The Smartest Giant In Town By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

The Smartest Giant In TownGeorge is a scruffy giant who is fed up of always wearing the same old patched-up clothes.

When he spots a new shop he treats himself to a brand new outfit. He even buys a tie! He loves his new look but it soon becomes apparent that not only is he the smartest giant in town, he is also the kindest.

He donates his new tie to a giraffe with a cold neck, his new shirt becomes a sail for a goat who is stranded in his boat, and a shiny new shoe becomes a house for a family of mice. Soon poor George has hardly any clothes on at all.

What on earth is he going to do? This is a lovely story about kindness, friendship and good karma.

The Magic Paintbrush By Julia Donaldson & Joel Stewart

The Magic PaintbrushThis is the Julia Donaldson version of a classic story I remember from my own childhood – The Magic Paintbrush.

Shen lives in a poor community and every day she is sent out to catch fish for her family.

Whilst waiting for a bite she traces pictures in the sand with a stick, which draws the attention of an old man. The curious stranger gives her a magic paintbrush and tells her to use it to help the poor but never the rich.

Shen goes home and realises that anything she draws comes to life. She paints fish, oysters, baskets, shoes, coats and hats for the folk in her village and soon the community thrives.

But what will Shen do when the evil emperor summons her to his palace and threatens to keep her prisoner unless she draws him a tree of golden coins?

Beautifully illustrated by Joel Stewart, and Julia Donaldson’s magic touch really brings this folk tale to life.

Sugarlump And The UnicornWe love Sugarlump and the Unicorn by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks.

Sugarlump is a rocking horse who becomes discontented with his life when the children who own him grow up and go to school. Enter a magical unicorn who grants his wishes and lets him be who he wants to be. But after stints on a farm, at a race course and in a circus he’s still not happy and he misses the children.

Will he ever fulfil his potential and become the horse he was meant to be?

The illustrations in this one are fab and there are raised glittery sections on every page for your little one to find and touch.

Room On The Broom By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

Room On The BroomAs Halloween approaches it only seems right to draw attention to this absolute classic from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

A friendly witch flies on her broomstick on a windy day but the wind keeps blowing away her witchy essentials, including her hat and her wand.

Each time she lands to hunt them down a clever animal helps her and then joins her on her broom. She’s soon travelling with a veritable menagerie but then the broom snaps in two and they all tumble to the ground and land in the path of a hungry dragon. How will they ever escape?

A Squash And A Squeeze By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

A Squash And A SqueezeOnce upon a time Julia Donaldson wrote children’s songs and ‘A Squash And A Squeeze’ was one of the most popular. She was contacted by a publisher who wanted to turn the song into a book and the rest, as they say, is history! She realised that her rhymes were perfectly suited to books and a legend was born.

The story is about a little old lady who complains that her house is too small. She asks a wise old man for advice and mayhem ensues as her house slowly fills with animals and seems even smaller.

What is the wise man’s plan and will it work?

Ivy loves this one and it’s my go-to book if she’s upset because it never fails to make her laugh.

Superworm By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

SuperwormSuperworm is everyone’s favourite worm.

Super long and super strong he saves lives and entertains his friends every day until evil Wizard Lizard kidnaps him and sets him to work tunnelling for treasure. When his friends find out what has happened they hatch a cunning plan to save the day.

I have to admit this book is a tiny bit annoying but Ivy loves the illustrations and always cheers at the end!
