Ivy’s Guest Book: Maxine Kerley, Owner, Digital Bon Bons

Digital Bon BonsTell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hi, I’m Maxine. I live in Kent with my husband Patrick, our daughter Ava who’s 4, two kittens called Polly & Tigger and a snake called Kaa. I’m a digital marketing consultant for family focused brands and businesses.

What is your son/daughter’s favourite book?

For Ava it’s  The Gruffalo and Stick Man by Julia Donaldson – we have read these to her ever since she was super little and The Gruffalo was one of the first books she started to recite by herself at 22 months, she knew all the words – we couldn’t believe it. She loves the stories. Plus going on the hunt for a Gruffalo or following a Stick Man trail if we’re out for a walk. She will always pick up a “Stick Man” to take home.

Which book do you most like reading to them and why?

I love reading anything by Janet & Allan Ahlberg to her because they were my favourites when I was a child. I still have a lot of my books, which are now hers so I love reading The Jolly Postman and opening up all the envelopes and reading the letters in different voices. It’s just such a happy book. I also like the Little People Big Dreams collection by Isabel Sanchez Vegara. Ava loves these too and our collection started with Coco Chanel and now includes Frida Kahlo, Maya Angelou, Agatha Christie and more. I like these because it’s telling her about amazing women who achieved fantastic things in their lives, all with different backgrounds, cultures and had faced different battles but they have they all achieved. This is inspiring and I love inspiring her that women can do great things.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?

I was also a big Roald Dahl fan and I loved George’s Marvellous Medicine. That book used to make me laugh and the way he described the Grandma – even thinking about it now I remember chuckling so much. All his book are fantastic. I love Fantastic Mr Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, The Twits – he had such a great imagination to create characters and worlds and feelings that you read them and you’re transported, that’s what great storytelling is.

Who is your favourite illustrator and why?

Quentin Blake – absolutely love his work from seeing it in Roald Dahl books. It’s sketchy and full of life, it’s brings the characters alive on the page and almost animates them with his rough outlines and edges.
