Ivy’s Guest Book: Elinor Perry, Founder, Biddy and Bear

Biddy and BearTell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I’m Elinor, maker of children’s clothes and mother of four, based in Leeds. My eldest is all grown up now at 19, and my young ones are 5, 4 and 14 months.

What are your children’s favourite books?

My 5 and 4 year old adore the whole Oi Frog series by Kes Gray. They howl with laughter every time, and they can recite them now too as we’ve read them so often. We love the rhymes and it’s been great for widening their vocabulary. When we meet new people, they want to find a rhyme to see where they would sit!

Ivy’s Guest Book: Anna and Daphne Paley-Smith, Founders of Offshoot Studio

Hi Anna! Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hi, I’m Anna and I live in Clapham, London with my husband, Greg and our two children, Charlie who’s two years old and Sophia who’s two months old.

Alongside my mum, Daphne, I am a co-founder of Offshoot Studio, an art studio specialising in handmade limited edition archival giclée prints for children. Mum is the artist and I run the studio.

The natural world is a huge source of inspiration in the studio. It’s endlessly fascinating and appealing to mum, and we think to most children too. Our prints are illustrations to stories waiting to be told.  Things are happening up in the sky, deep in the jungle, out in the desert, and under the sea.  All it needs is a little imagination, and a child wanting to hear or tell their own special story. Our prints let you escape into their world together …

Brand New MumTell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hi! I’m Lucy. I’m mother to two girls aged 1 and 3, and along with my partner we recently moved from central Manchester to a lovely rural market town in Cheshire to be nearer family as the kids grow up. After having my first baby in 2015 I launched my coaching business Brand New Mum. I now work supporting women who are either starting or growing creative, independent businesses after having children.

The Jolly Christmas Postman By Janet & Allan Ahlberg

The Jolly Christmas PostmanThis one is a must for fans of the original Jolly Postman book. This time around the postman is delivering Christmas post to all of your favourite nursery rhyme characters – and eating a lot of mince pies along the way!

Along with the lovely story and the detailed illustrations you get the added bonus of being able to open all the envelopes to see what’s inside.

Ivy loves pulling out the little cards and pretending to read them.

Peepo! By Janet & Allan Ahlberg

Peepo!A few weeks ago we reviewed ‘Each Peach Pear Plum’ and we were inundated with messages telling us we had to read PEEPO! if we hadn’t already. I promptly bought us a copy and we can definitely see why you all love it so much! If you haven’t read this to your toddler yet then I would definitely recommend it.

A baby is standing in his cot pointing. What can he see? The cut out circle on the next page lets you see a small portion of the baby’s view. PEEPO!

Turn the page for a beautifully detailed picture and a rhyme which encourages you to find lots of different things within the illustration. This set up repeats throughout the book, encouraging lots of conversation around the contents of the pictures.

It’s a real delight which can either be a quick read at bedtime or something you can easily spend an hour looking at with your child. We love it!

Each Peach Pear Plum By Janet & Allan Ahlberg

Each Peach Pear plumWe were recommended this one by a friend so I bought it yesterday and Ivy is already hooked.

The cute little rhyme brings together well known nursery rhyme characters and encourages you to play I-Spy as they are hidden within the beautiful illustrations. Ivy’s favourite character is Baby Bunting and she excitedly shouts ‘BABY!’ when she spots him.

Highly recommended and I’m surprised we hadn’t come across this one before!

Funnybones By Janet & Allan Ahlberg

FunnybonesHappy Halloween!

Ivy is still a little young to understand this one but she loves the illustrations and enthusiastically hums along with the song (The leg bone’s connected to the – hip bone!).

This spooky little book tells the tale of a family of skeletons who live in the dark dark cellar of a dark dark house on a dark dark street. One night the skeleton family take their skeleton dog for a walk to the park and plan to frighten someone along the way.

It doesn’t quite go to plan though – with hilarious results!

Ivy’s Guest Book: Daisy Cartlidge Brown, Social Media Manager

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hello! I’m Daisy and I’m a freelance social media manager. I live with my husband, Chris and our one year old daughter Florence. We live in Lincoln after moving up here from London last year and are really enjoying the change.

What is your daughter’s favourite book?

It has to be Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. She’s loved it since she was around 7 months old and still gets excited when we read it together. It’s starting to get a little worse for wear! It is a lift-the-flap book with animals hidden underneath and has been a children’s classic since 1982. She loves lifting the flaps and there is a great rhythm to the story which makes it almost musical to read.

Ivy’s Guest Book: Sarah Birchall, Founder, Cub & Pudding

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.

I’m Sarah – juggler of two kids aged 6 and 3, founder/designer of Cub & Pudding – my unisex kidswear brand (named after the mini’s baby bump nicknames) and wife to a Graphic Designer who came south to uni from Bolton and hasn’t left yet. We live in Crystal Palace where we spend half our time proclaiming its amazement and the other half cursing & vowing to escape London to the coast somewhere.

What are your children’s favourite books?

Urgh. I’m going to forget Peppa Pig books exist and bypass them to instead mention The Something by Rebecca Cobb. It’s the story of a mysterious hole appearing the garden and wondering what ‘The Something’ is that might live down it.. a dragon? a mole? a hungry troll?
