IshRamon loves to draw, and does so whenever he gets the opportunity. However one day his older brother takes a look at one of his pictures and laughs at him. Ramon had been trying to draw a vase of flowers but his brother can’t tell what it is so he scrumples up the paper and throws it away. He tries many more times but can’t seem to get it right so, with his brother’s laughter still ringing in his ears, he decides to give up drawing forever.

His little sister Marisol wants to see what he has been drawing but, presuming that she just wants to laugh to, Ramon gets defensive and shouts at her. She runs away with a drawing in her hand and when he chases her he is surprised to see that she has his vase drawings all over her bedroom walls. She loves the images and this makes him see them in a different light. It is a vase-ISH, and this is what Marisol likes.

The Princess And The PonyThis book has caused a lot of laughs in our house since we first bought it, mainly because it features a farting pony and what toddler wouldn’t find that funny?!

Princess Pinecone lives in a kingdom full of fierce warriors and she wants to be one to, but she has one big problem. She is tiny and adorable, which makes being a warrior a little tough!

For her birthday she requests a big, strong horse to ride in the next great battle, but her parents don’t get it quite right. They buy her a cute, round pony with flatulence issues who eats everything in sight. Dismayed, Princess Pinecone tries to train him up but the poor little pony is hopeless.

Triangle By Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen

TriangleWe knew that we had to buy this book when we spotted that Jon Klassen was the illustrator as he is one of our all-time favourites. This collaboration with Mac Barnett has weird and wonderful illustrations and a very funny little story.

Triangle is a mischievous little guy and one day he leaves his little triangular house and heads out to play a trick on his friend Square. When he arrives he hides outside Square’s house and hisses like a snake. Square is scared of snakes so he panics but then spots his friend Triangle who cannot stop giggling at the trick he has played.

Square chases Triangle all the way home, but once they’re there sneaky Square manages to have the last laugh (or does he?).

We love this quirky little book and it looks great on our shelf too!

A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton

A Bit LostOne day little owl is sleeping in his tree next to his Mummy when he accidentally falls out and bounces in to the forest. Alone and scared, he meets a squirrel who tries to help him find his Mummy.

Using the little owl’s limited descriptions (Big, Pointy Ears, Big Eyes) the squirrel leads him to lots of animals that he he thinks could be the mum but he can’t quite get it right. Will the little owl manage to make it home safely?

The minimalist illustrations by Chris Haughton are adorable and the story is great for sparking a conversation with your little one about how to describe what someone looks like and what to do if you get lost.

This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

This Is Not My HatOne of our followers pointed out to me earlier today that it is National Hat Day and we should therefore do a post about hats! Naturally this made me think of Jon Klassen’s epic hat books which always have Ivy and I in fits of giggles.

Our current favourite is ‘This is not my hat’ which tells the story of a cheeky little fish who has stolen a hat. He’s not worried because he’s pretty sure that he’ll get away with it – but the big fish he stole from definitely wants his hat back. We love the deadpan humour and the fact the text tells a very different story to the pictures.

The minimalist illustrations are fantastic and there is a great sense of tension as the story gathers pace.

Penguin Problems By Jory John & Lane Smith

A Child Of Books By Oliver Jeffers

A Child Of BooksThis book is so beautiful that it made me cry on the first read through. Ivy received it on her birthday and it really is a perfect gift for a book-loving child.

The story tells of a little girl who sails across an ocean of words to invite a little boy on an imaginative journey with her in a world of stories.

The pictures don’t do it justice, but if you look closely you can see that the illustrations are all made of words from classic children’s literature – including Gulliver’s Travels, Robinson Crusoe, Pinocchio, The Swiss Family Robinson and many more.

It looks and feels like something she can treasure for years and years. Go buy it – I cannot recommend it enough!

We Found A Hat By Jon Klassen

We Found A HatI imagine that this book wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste but we think it’s hilarious! It’s a simple book with a dry sense of humour and Ivy yells ‘Turtle! Hat! Turtle! Hat! all the way through it!

Two turtles find a hat in the desert.  They try it on and it suits them both. They each very much want the hat but there are two of them and only one hat. Can they find a way to each get what they want whilst remaining friends?

Guess How Much I Love YouThis evening we’ve got a super cute classic – Guess How Much I Love You.

Little Nutbrown Hare is about to go to bed but before he goes to sleep he wants to tell Big Nutbrown Hare just how much he loves him. He stretches his arms as far as they can go and he hops as high as he can but Big Nutbrown Hare can stretch and hop a little higher.

A gorgeous book about trying to vocalise the extent of your love (which I actually bought for Ivy’s Daddy long before she was born because I’m a soppy so and so)

On No, George! By Chris Haughton

Oh No, George!George the Dog is every toddler. He really, really wants to be good and he promises he will be but sometimes being good is just so hard! The loveable dog gets himself into a number of scrapes, causing the reader to shout ‘Oh No, George!’ each time.

The illustrations are gorgeous and Ivy is always reduced to fits of giggles as she yells ‘Oh No!’ at the extremely cute puppy protagonist.
