All Kids Are Good Kids

Ivy is fascinated by this beautiful little board book which celebrates the fact that all children are different.

The gentle rhyme encourages the reader to think about their own personalities as they explore the detailed illustrations. Are they a big kid or a little kid? Are they calm or a little crazy? Do they like hugs? Are they outdoorsy? Do they like to make a mess?

There is a diverse host of characters, playing in lots of different ways and I like the fact that care has been taken not to genderise the activities. We see little girls climbing, making a mess and dressing as superheroes and little boys snuggling with teddy bears and showing emotion.

The prospect of having a new baby brother or sister can be both exciting and daunting for a toddler. A new playmate sounds fantastic but where will the baby come from and how will life change when it arrives?

When I found out I was having Ivy I bought a big book which told me what to expect from my pregnancy and beyond, and this gorgeous book is like a mini version of that for kids!

The early pages talk about what having a new baby means and how it might affect you. It addresses the fact you might be a little worried and emphasises that although life won’t be the same, it will be better because there will be even more love and cuddles.

Gently, Bentley! By Caragh Buxton

Bentley is a cute little rhino with an exuberant personality. He throws himself in to situations with gusto – but unfortunately this often gets him in to trouble as he has no concept of his own size or strength. Something that will be very familiar to parents/carers of toddlers!

At breakfast he accidentally smashes his boiled eggs. He cracks the ceiling getting ready to leave the house for school and causes mayhem playing tag at playtime. He doesn’t mean to be so rambunctious – he just is!

‘Gently Bentley!’ is repeated frequently throughout the book as his parents and teachers try to stop him from breaking everything in sight. But then one day he goes home and there is a tiny new baby, fast asleep in her crib. His mum and dad hold their breath as he approaches. Surely he’s going to wake her up – or is he?

Snuggle The Baby by Sara Gillingham

This book is so fantastic that I can’t really do it justice in a mini review. It’s beautifully illustrated, well thought out and a great interactive learning tool.

The book itself talks about babies – how to look after them, how to play with them and how to show them love. However what lifts this above other books about babies is the fact you can interact with the pictures and even take the baby and her bottle out of the book to play with.

Ivy loves getting the baby out and keeping it by her side – kissing her, talking to her, feeding her milk and rocking her back and forth – but she always makes sure that she puts her safely back to bed in the back of the book so she doesn’t get lost.

The Baby’s Catalogue By Janet and Allan Ahlberg

This is a gorgeous picture book which gives you a little window in to the lives of 5 babies and their families. From prams, swings, nappies and games to shopping, meals, pets and bedtime this lovely book shows all the things a toddler may encounter in a day.

Ivy loves pointing at the pictures and naming all the things she that she currently knows the words for.

It’s a great little conversation starter with your child and is also a nice way of showing how every family is different.

Peepo! By Janet & Allan Ahlberg

A few weeks ago we reviewed ‘Each Peach Pear Plum’ and we were inundated with messages telling us we had to read PEEPO! if we hadn’t already. I promptly bought us a copy and we can definitely see why you all love it so much! If you haven’t read this to your toddler yet then I would definitely recommend it.

A baby is standing in his cot pointing. What can he see? The cut out circle on the next page lets you see a small portion of the baby’s view. PEEPO!

Turn the page for a beautifully detailed picture and a rhyme which encourages you to find lots of different things within the illustration. This set up repeats throughout the book, encouraging lots of conversation around the contents of the pictures.

It’s a real delight which can either be a quick read at bedtime or something you can easily spend an hour looking at with your child. We love it!

All Of Baby Nose To Toes By Victoria Adler & Hiroe Nakata

I bought this book when Ivy was just a few months old on the recommendation of one of the mum’s in my NCT group and it’s been read hundreds of times.

The very sweet rhyme goes through all the cute details of a baby’s eyes, ears, nose, tummy and toes and each section ends with an opportunity to give your little one a squeeze and tell them how much you love them.

When Ivy was tiny she was fascinated by the lovely baby illustrations and now she sits in giggly anticipation of getting tickled and squished!
