Ivy’s Guest Book: Sarah Billingham, Co-Founder, Confident Kids

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I’m Sarah, a special needs teacher, living in Bracknell with my husband and our 2 daughter’s Clara (5) and Alice (6 months). I grew up in South Africa and came to England looking for a bit of an adventure and the chance to travel. 15 years later it is safe to say that it became more permanent than I had planned!

What are your children’s favourite books?

Clara has returned to Julia Donaldson books over and over. As a toddler she loved The Smartest Giant in Town and as a pre-schooler she really enjoyed the Highway Rat, Jack and the Flum Flum Tree and The Troll. Clara loves books and reads new books every week (lots of library visits!) but she has returned to her Julia Donaldson favourites. I think the rhythm and rhyme in these books is very engaging. She is now taking great pride in reading to her little sister.

Ivy’s Guest Book: Hannah O’Donoghue-Hobbs, Founder, Tilly Hobbs & Co

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

My name’s Hannah and my little passion project is Tilly Hobbs & Co – an insta blog where I sell Manchester themed muslin cloths and document me guessing my way through motherhood ha in our glorious city. I have one little girl called Cora, she’s my little livewire, I’m obsessed!

What is your daughter’s favourite book?

Now this does vary from day to night. Our daytime favourite has to be The President’s Cat by Peter Donnelly – it’s a lovely, lovely story about the President of Ireland leaving his cat behind when he comes home after a holiday in Kerry. Cora loves pointing out the cat on his little journey, the horse poo on one of the pages and the many, many cars and buses on a page featuring Dublin city centre. Reading that backward sounds insane, please go and read it ha! The illustrations are like food for my eyes.

Ivy’s Guest Book: Jaime Cox, Founder, Compelling Copy

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hello! I’m Jaime, I’m a copywriter and editor based in Berkshire and I have three children – 12-year-old identical twin boys and a 2-year-old daughter.

What are your children’s favourite books?

All 3 of my children adore books – a huge relief as I do too! My youngest has several favourites, but the current number 1 is Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson. Mae is very much into babies at the moment, so I think that’s the main appeal of this particular book. She also loves the animals in the story – woolly mammoth and sabre-tooth tiger. She loves to roar at the moment, and this book provides the perfect opportunity 🙂

RWR Book Club: Best Books of 2019

Earlier this year I was invited to join a #bookstagram group called the Read with River Book Club. The group consists of 16 lovely members from around the world, including a number of educators, a speech language pathologist, a paediatrician, social justice activists, a reading education specialist, a few bloggers, a retired literary agent, and some marketers.

It has been an absolute joy getting to know these amazing people and sharing our favourite picture books and thoughts/ideas about the children’s book industry.

Between us we have a lot of expertise so we have come together to form a judging panel to create a list of the best new picture books of 2019. Publishers have been invited to send submissions across a number of categories and my dining room table is now awash with stacks and stacks of fantastic books which are awaiting the judging process.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hi I’m Trine. I live in Hertfordshire with my other half Andy, our busy two-year-old son Oskar and our French bulldog Alfie, three. We are raising Oskar (and Alfie) bilingual as I am originally from Denmark but have lived in the UK for 13 years. It is important to me that Oskar knows his heritage.

I run Pickled Herring PR, where I specialise in getting small to medium sized brands exposure outside of social media, print and online, to help drive credibility, exposure and a different revenue stream to your brand. I’m incredibly passionate about telling your story, to the right people, in the right places, to help you grow.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I’m Julie Comfort. Originally from the US, I have lived all over the world including San Francisco, Indonesia, Austin, Costa Rica, Mexico, New York, and now Berlin, where I am putting down roots with my Danish partner and our two wonderful daughters, Tully (12) & Nova (1.5). I work as a freelance experience designer and brand strategist and am also the publisher and editor of Rabbel, the creative print magazine for fierce-hearted girls.

Since we are a multi-cultural family, we have a pile of books in three languages: English, Danish, and German. I try to read the Danish picture books with my daughter as it helps me improve my Danish as well.

What are your children’s favourite books?

My older daughter loved Wildwood by Colin Meloy. We read it together when she was about 5 or 6, and then she reread it herself last year. My younger daughter hasn’t gravitated toward a favourite yet.

We live in North-East London with my husband, Thom, and two fur babies, Zissou & Django. Our family time is split between Epping Forest, the impossible number of pizza places in Walthamstow and somewhere on the road to the beach. My heart is normally in Cornwall.

What is your son’s favourite book?

As a family we all love reading, we have a selection of books in every room!. At the moment our 5 year is loving Mibo – The Safari Set by Button Books (We stock these books on our site) Great activity book, which allows him to explore through rhyme and pictures. Teaching him about Safari regions while having fun. The best feature is the pull out 2D figures which can be constructed into 3D. Bringing the story to life!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

Hello! I’m Daisy and I’m a freelance social media manager. I live with my husband, Chris and our one year old daughter Florence. We live in Lincoln after moving up here from London last year and are really enjoying the change.

What is your daughter’s favourite book?

It has to be Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. She’s loved it since she was around 7 months old and still gets excited when we read it together. It’s starting to get a little worse for wear! It is a lift-the-flap book with animals hidden underneath and has been a children’s classic since 1982. She loves lifting the flaps and there is a great rhythm to the story which makes it almost musical to read.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I’m Lily. We live in Bristol and I split my time between being a freelance sportswear designer and being a mama to my daughter aged 4 and my son who is now 19 months.

What are your children’s favourite books?

Cillian, my youngest, is obsessed with the ‘That’s Not My’ series from Usborne books. When I say obsessed, his 2nd word was book! He has numerous versions and carts them around the house demanding that we read them to him. I didn’t use them with my daughter but they’re really brilliant, firstly with just getting him to recognise books at a super young age, but then as he progressed he could turn the chunky pages and now we use them to help him identify body parts as many of the pages are on noses, eyes etc. They’ve set him up for a fall though as he’s now super disappointed in any book that doesn’t feature a textured page!
